These are photos from a weekend drive to LA the long way, via the Owens Valley and Death Valley.
Smallest town I've ever seen marked... (the sign says "Population 2")
There was an amazing amount of snow in the high Sierras for mid-June... this is at maybe 8000 feet.
The Owens Valley (also known as the Valley where LA Gets its Water From) is dramatic with California's tallest mountains forming one side.
Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the 48 states, is a dramatic view approaching from the west. You can drive to the trailhead which is well up into the mountain range.
I camped here near Death Valley (just outside the park). Who says you need a 4wd!
The rest of the trip was in LA--my friend Jeff arrived in from the 500 mile San Francisco to Los Angeles California AIDS fundraiser ride... 2600 bicyclists in one spot.
