August 19, 1997, near Fort Wingate, NM: The Cibola National Forest near Gallup is a great and very uncrowded place to camp.
August 21, 1997, Albuquerque, NM: The desert thunderstorm season has eluded me for a year now, until this day. Just 15 minutes south of Albuquerque, you're in the Laguna Indian reservation, and there's nothing around but grasslands.
August 22, 1997, Albuquerque, NM: I convince a friend of mine, Glenn, to drive me out to the nearest thunderstorm. We succeed in getting away with no hail damage to the car.
August 22, 1997, Albuquerque, NM: Electrical storms look so cool that I convince Rob and Jenny to cancel their planned dinner to eat at another place which has an outdoor patio facing the oncoming storms. When we get to the restaurant, we're told the patio is closed, but we convince them to open it up again for us--"Really, we don't mind the weather." Nobody gets wet, and nobody is electrocuted. (I'd feel bad if I convinced people to eat somewhere just so they could get struck by lightning.)
August 23, 1997, near Bernalillo, NM: Is that *really* the Mirage Golf Course on my right, along the desolate stretches of New Mexico highway? What is Steve Wynn speculating on here?
August 23, 1997, near Raton, NM: New speed record (mine, not world, as far as I know) established at 121 mph.
